Korean Stock Market Hours: KOSPI & KOSDAQ Trading Times
StableStock Team |Aug 20 2026, 06:03:56

Definition — The Korean stock market's regular trading session runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM Korea Standard Time (KST), Monday through Friday. KOSPI and KOSDAQ follow the same schedule, with no lunch break. The Korea Exchange (KRX) also operates pre-market and after-hours sessions outside regular trading hours.

What Time Does the Korean Stock Market Open?

The Korea Exchange opens its regular stock trading session at 9:00 AM KST and closes at 3:30 PM KST.

That gives KOSPI and KOSDAQ stocks a 6.5-hour regular trading session.

Session

Korea Standard Time (KST)

Pre-opening order period

8:30 AM–9:00 AM

Regular trading

9:00 AM–3:30 PM

After-hours trading

3:40 PM–6:00 PM

Korea Standard Time is UTC+9 and does not observe daylight saving time, so the local exchange schedule stays the same throughout the year.

Do KOSPI and KOSDAQ Have the Same Trading Hours?

Yes.

Stocks listed on both KOSPI and KOSDAQ trade during the same regular session:

9:00 AM–3:30 PM KST

There is also no midday trading break. Once regular trading begins at 9:00 AM, the market remains open continuously until 3:30 PM.

This differs from some other Asian markets that split the trading day into morning and afternoon sessions.

What Happens Before 9:00 AM?

Before continuous trading begins, the exchange goes through a pre-opening period.

Orders for the opening auction can be submitted from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM KST. Instead of immediately matching every order as it arrives, the exchange collects buy and sell orders and uses them to determine the stock's opening price.

The opening price is established at 9:00 AM through a call auction.

This matters after overnight news. If Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, or another Korean company releases important information while the market is closed, buy and sell orders can build up before the opening bell.

The result may be an opening price significantly above or below the previous day's close.

Is There After-Hours Trading in Korea?

Yes, but Korean after-hours trading does not work exactly like the extended-hours market in the United States.

After the regular session closes at 3:30 PM KST, KRX provides several off-hours trading mechanisms.

One is an after-hours closing-price session, where eligible securities can trade at that day's closing price.

Another runs from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM KST, using periodic call auctions. Orders are collected and matched at intervals rather than continuously in the same way as during the regular session.

For most investors, the important distinction is:

Regular session: continuous trading from 9:00 AM–3:30 PM
After-hours: more restricted trading mechanisms through 6:00 PM

Available sessions and order types can also depend on your broker.

Korean Stock Market Hours in Other Time Zones

Because Korea is in UTC+9, its stock market opens much earlier than European and U.S. markets.

Location

Korean Regular Session

Seoul

9:00 AM–3:30 PM

Singapore

8:00 AM–2:30 PM

Hong Kong

8:00 AM–2:30 PM

London

12:00 AM–6:30 AM*

New York

7:00 PM–1:30 AM*

*London and New York times can shift by one hour when daylight saving time is in effect. Korea does not use daylight saving time.

For investors in Asia, Korean stocks therefore trade largely during the normal business day. For investors in Europe or North America, most of the Korean session takes place overnight.

Is the Korean Stock Market Open on Weekends?

No.

KRX normally operates Monday through Friday and closes on Saturdays, Sundays, Korean public holidays, Labor Day on May 1, and the exchange's year-end closing day.

Holiday schedules can change from year to year, so checking the current exchange calendar matters if you're planning a trade around a Korean holiday.

This is especially important for international investors: a normal working day in your country may still be a market holiday in Korea.

Why Trading Hours Matter

Knowing when a market is technically open is only the first step.

Liquidity is not evenly distributed throughout the trading day. The opening and closing periods can see heavier activity as investors react to overnight information, rebalance positions, or execute orders tied to the closing price.

Outside regular hours, liquidity can be thinner and execution works differently.

That means an order placed at 5:00 PM KST should not automatically be treated the same way as one placed at 11:00 AM KST.

If you're trading across several countries, it helps to think in the exchange's local time first:

Korea: KST (UTC+9)
Regular session: 9:00 AM–3:30 PM
No lunch break
After-hours activity: through 6:00 PM

Takeaway: KOSPI and KOSDAQ share the same regular trading hours, running from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM KST, Monday through Friday. Korea does not observe daylight saving time and there is no midday break. Pre-opening and after-hours sessions exist, but their execution rules differ from regular continuous trading, so always check which sessions and order types your broker supports.
